(Reshare old post) Work-Life Balance

This is a good debate and quite a controversial topic actually (depends on which role you are in: Boss or Employee), but I would like to share my opinion based on an HR standpoint.

When we interview a candidate, we will ask “Why you would like to leave your current company?” Some of them will tell you that they cannot stand working overtime (OT) anymore. To be honest, some of the recruiters or hiring managers will mark a “No” to this candidate when they hear this answer. However, I will ask for the definition of overtime. Normally, their answers would be quite acceptable. In the IT industry, OT is very common, especially in an IT consulting firm. It’s becuase we have no idea when the server will have trouble, an expected shutdown, bug fix required etc. These problems require 7 x 24 support or prompt response. Also, with the labour shortage, companies are unable to hire enough IT talents. With the increasing IT requests and limited human resources, overtime becomes inevitable.

Of course, I don’t agree with OT! However, it’s unavoidable. My advice would be as follows:

– Talk to your boss when your work is overwhelming or work overload

– Explore ways / solutions to improve the efficiencies (HR can make use of RPA tools to reduce repetitive tasks)

– Resign if you are lack of help, no job is worth sacrificing your mental health and well-being

– Reach out to a doctor or mental health consultant if needed

Next time, I will continue to discuss this topic~
