(Reshare old post) Reference Check – 2

In my previous post, I discussed some inappropriate and dishonest behaviors I encountered during the interview process with candidates. Today, I’d like to delve into the reference check process.

Throughout my career, I’ve been involved in a reference check project. During my time at a tech company, I participated in a special project where we had numerous hiring needs for positions in India and Singapore. All shortlisted candidates were required to undergo a reference check before onboarding. To conduct these checks, we enlisted the services of a professional company. They collected information based on the candidates’ CVs and conducted criminal records checks to ensure everyone had a clean record. For instance, if a candidate claimed to have graduated from the University of Singapore, the reference check company would verify the validity of this claim with the university. During this process, we discovered that some candidates had fabricated academic experience. As a result, they were marked as blacklisted and barred from ever joining the company.

While this may seem like a harsh punishment, honesty is one of the fundamental traits we value in candidates.

Next time, I will share my personal experience on background check~
