I had a chat with a former colleague last week regarding job hunting.
About my colleague:
I recruited him to my recruitmer team back in July 2022 and he worked under me for 9 months until my departure. For some reasons, he also left 4 months later. Although both of us have moved on, we’ve remained good friends. As his ex-supervisor, when he came to me for advice, of course, it was time to help. As he’s now open to market, he is actively applying jobs that match his past experience and skillset since early Sept. Unfortunately, the feedback from the companies are slower than expected.
For example, he applied for a recruiter position at an insurance firm through a job board in Early Sept but in vain. Unexpectedly, he received an in-mail from this firm on linkedin last week and asked if he’s interested in the same position. So what happened? Was he being reconsidered? or did their recruiters miss his application a month ago? After our conversation, it turned out that the company had overlooked his application. Surprising, Right?!
However, that really make sense. First of all, it’s true that recruiters spend about 6 seconds to review the CV. We are all human and can overlook things. If you believe you are a good fit, dont hesitate to re-apply after two weeks without feedback.
Secondly, Recruiters prefer direct sourcing over direct applications. From my experience, we heavily rely on direct sourcing for senior positions, because the qualities are much much much better. Unfortunately, most of the applications (nearly 80%) we receive on job boards are not relevant. Let’s say it’s a Java programmer position, the CVs we received are like below:
1. lack an IT edu background
2. dont know Java
3. without any IT terms in the CV
From my perspective, I’d prefer spending my time on direct sourcing rather than waiting for the right applications sometimes. But don’t worry, I don’t mean to freak you out. I will still read all the applications. You may also wonder where recruiter do all the direct sourcing? Bingo, it’s Linkedin! Let me share the tips of using Linkedin later.
That’s all for today. Hope you like this article~
