Today, we will discuss salary negotiation. After completing all interviews, the HR will discuss the salary with you if you are the right candidate. Normally, candidates will encounter 3 situations:
1. Being underpaid / facing a pay-cut / receiving an offer below expectation (60%)
2. Salary aligning with the expectation (30%)
3. Exceeding expectation (10%)
Unfortunately, the majority of candidates are quite familiar with the first situaiton. During my HR journey, several reasons account for offers below expectation:
1. Candidate performance during the interview is lower than expected, but the hiring manager would like to proceed due to labour shortages
2. Candidate’s asking salary exceeds certain levels within the company’s salary structure (grading / banding / level)
3. The candidate’s asking is on the higher side (maybe 30% +) and requires benchmarking against the team’s current salary strucutre
Also, HR has different missions during salary negotiation:
– Reducing labor cost
– Goal oriented hiring, regardless of the $$
– Persuading candidates to join with a reasonable salary
To accomplish these missions, various approaches are employed when discussing salary with candidates.
That’s all for today. Let me share the details in the coming posts!
