(Reshare old post) CV Writing – 3

Today, I will continue to focus on CV writing skill: Education.

When we talk about education, it’s so cruical that it’s the threshold of applying some jobs. In some circumstances, it’s related to a job which required professional degree. For some cases, it just reflected your education level or telling the others how good or bad you might be. To be honest, I dont agree we use education level to judge people, because there are many wonderful people / genuis without a proper degree, you name it: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs etc. I understand these big names are too far, but as a recruiter, I did see many capable people with hugh successful even without a proper degree. So don’t give up, follow your pace!

Going back to this topic. There are many ways to show your education level.

1. If you are a FG: you may place it in the begining (after the summary), if your degree is not that bad. Some students may ask if it is a must to show your GPA, I would say it’s optional. If you are not being asked to provide it explicitly, just skip it if your grade doesnt look good. Example, below 3 out of 4.3 OR 4, dont put it there!!! If your degree cant make you stand out from other competitors, you may also put education at the bottom and focus on your intern experience / curricular activities after your summary section.

2. If you are a candidate with some work experience, I don’t think you need to put this section in the begining (after the summary), you can just put it at the bottom. As you have gained work experience, your education won’t matter.

3. If you have 10+ years work experience, don’t put your education on the first page. Write a good summary, put your certifications after that (just to show that you keep learning), but dont mix your certifcation with education. At this point, no one will care your education level. If they really care, you better reconsider your application. Your skillsets would be their major concerns rather than education.

Items need to be mentioned in education:

University Degree only (unless you dont have one, then please provide secondary school info)

1. University Name with Graduation Year (MM/YYYY – MM/YYYY)

2. Name of the degree

3. GPA (Optional) / Thesis name and details (within 2 sentences)

That’s all for today!
